Free Movies

Summer is always filled with fun. Another good thing offered in the summer is free family-friendly movies. So far this summer we've seen Elmo in Grouchland with friends and today we saw The Bee Movie with family.

The Elmo movie didn't go so well because I made the mistake of sitting on the end next to the handicap metal platform. Ava had easy access out of her seat and a loud, banging stage to perform on. We only made it through 3/4 of the movie before I took off.

Today was SO much better. We were on the inside of the row, well prepared with breakfast and milk, and she was entertained. We lasted the whole movie with minimal complaining! Good job Ava!

We finished off the afternoon with In-N-Out with
Camille, Jeremy, Sara, and Makenna.
Fun summer outing!

First Earthquake

Today Ava and I experienced our first earthquake! We were at the park, sitting on the ground, playing in the sand when all of a sudden the ground started to move! It was a pretty freaky feeling - instead of the expected shaking, it was more like waves. Eric also felt it in Irvine while he was eating lunch at Del Taco. An eye opening moment was when I tried calling Eric shortly after the quake and the cell lines were tied up. Makes me really think about emergency preparedness. It lasted about 20 seconds and measured in at 5.4. Even though it was kind of a cool experience, I definitely don't look forward to more of them in the future. Now I know why Debra hates them so much!

Good Entertainment

With so many kids around in the Suman family we are never short of entertainment. The Carlsons are in town from Idaho. We were hanging out Monday night and some of the kids decided to put on a parade with plastic musical instruments. Ava even got involved with a recorder.

They also performed songs around the piano and guitar.

This seems to run into the extended family too because when the Smiths were in town they performed a play based on Star Wars.

Funny, entertaining kids!

U.S. Open

This past weekend was the finals for the U.S. Open of Surfing here in Huntington Beach. We knew it was going to be crowded when we headed down there on Saturday with Camille, Jeremy, Meredith, Sara, Mark and Makenna but it seriously was SO crowded!

Parking was horrible but luckily Mark and Eric were kind enough to drop us off and pick us up and do the mile walk to the car!

The Open was super fun though.
We watched BMX biking, surfing, FMX, skating, and a lot of people watching.

There were cool drummers in the middle of all the booths.
I think Jeremy thought it was too loud.

Meredith was really into the free stuff like energy drinks, fake tatoos, and T-shirts.

She decide to ride this motorized surf board because if you stayed up long enough you got a free shirt. It was harder than it looked and didn't last too long.

Ava was really confused by these skater boys who were wearing cardboard "hats" (so were we).

After the beach we came back to our apartment for pizza and the Knowles family was in town from Florida so they joined us too. For some reason I didn't get out my camera. I can't believe how grown up Lilly is and they are expecting another baby girl in December. It is so fun to see old friends.

Meredith spent the night with us and went to Robbie Knowles' homecoming on Sunday. Then we headed back down to the beach. That is when we saw the Mens Surfing finals. I got a good shot of the French man.

And then we saw the best part of the open...the FMX. It was so cool!
Check out a couple of pics of the stunts we saw.

That evening we brought Meredith home and stayed for dinner.
Who knows why but we broke out into a dodgeball game! Always finding ways to have fun.

Orange County Fair

The OC Fair is known for its fried foods. This year's item of choice was the deep fried White Castle burger. How disgusting is that? The free concerts have gone downhill in the last few years. In 2001 we saw Weird Al for free and this year? A Journey tribute band. But I loved the theme this year...cheese!

We watched a cheese eating contest. I was tempted to enter since I love it so much. Afterward we watched a man sculpt a huge block of cheddar cheese. We asked him if it smelled terrible in his little cube and surprisingly he said it did not.

We found the silly mirrors and loved how Jeremy looked like a midget compared to us.

Eric was excited to look at the prize winning fruit and vegetables. Ava like them too.

Meredith wanted to milk the pretend cow.

The attraction that Ava loved best were the animals. There was a petting zoo set up where you could actually be in with the animals. There were the usual farm animals but also a donkey, deer, and llamas. It was cool to see the animals close up and interact with them.

There was a little grocery store where Ava and Jeremy had fun "shopping".

We all loved the cardboard cutouts.

At the end of the evening, Camille took Jeremy on an elephant ride.

It's always an adventure at the fair. The best part was that it was free with canned food donations and we scored free parking. It definitey was worth it...cheese!

Free Poster Night

Tonight we went to another Angels game with the Suman fam.

It was free poster night. Meredith and Eric got creative with what to do with theirs. Ava wore one. Mark/Meredith threw one. I yelled in Meredith's ear with one.

Somehow we always have a great time together.

Big Bear

Eric, Ava and I were invited up to Big Bear this weekend with the Eisenbises and Meredith. Bryan's parents own a cabin right on the lake. I couldn't get over how beautiful it was up there. The lake, cabins, the little village, pine trees, wildlife, and only two hours from home. I love California!

Bryan's grandfather built the A-frame cabin and I was so impressed by all the little details and memories that Bryan knew about the cabin and the area. I loved the old (and new) furniture, the open room sleeping arrangement, and especially the deck looking out to the water. Yummy pancake breakfasts too!

Meredith, Bryan, Camille, Jeremy and we all spent two nights there. Saturday was a super fun day because the Willard, other Sumans and Eric's parents joined us.

We went out on the wave runner. We took Ava for a little ride too.

I loved Ava in her life jacket...so cute.

After the three of us went out, Ava stayed behind while Eric and I went out on the wave runner. She was sad to see us go but she was fine while we were gone. Then as soon as she saw us coming back she started crying again. So silly. She was happy to be reunited with her mom.

Meredith attempted tubing off the back of the wave runner but that didn't work out too well.

A pirate ship tour boat came though the lagoon a few times. We all yelled "fire in the hole" and when the boom happened it was SO loud. No wonder the neighbors complained about that.

Casey, Bryan and Meredith all tried learning how to wind surf which looked incredibly hard.

Ava and Jeremy liked playing in the tube in the water.

Ava "laying out" on her towel.

She actually spent most of the time running around barefoot on the rocky ground pouring dirt on her legs, trying to put rocks in her ears and sitting on the poky grass. And after she was changed out of her bathing suit she decided she wanted back in the water. Water was definitely the word of the weekend. I heard it nonstop. She loves it so much.

Makenna and Owen entertained each other for a bit.

Casey really wanted to complete this puzzle.

We had a great time staying up late watching Juno and chatting. On Sunday morning we woke up to a thunderstorm. We also went to the ward there. Ava ended up eating some bad yogurt and throwing it up while during sacrament which is so weird since it was only about the third time she has ever thrown up. Here she is before church looking happier.

After we left the cabin, we drove around the lake and tried to follow the path of the marathon Eric will be running in about 6 weeks. We are excited to go back.

Thanks for the fun weekend!
