Clapping

Ava has learned how to clap. I'm not sure who was more excited about her accomplishment, me or her. We were definitely both proud. Here's the video. I am sorry about my silly voice.

Parks, parks, parks

Jeremy arrived at our house yesterday at 7am and spent the night with us last night. Since we had two full days to entertain we hit up some fun places. We went to the Prehistoric Pet Store that feels more like a zoo. I was even impressed. Although, I almost had a mini panic attack being in an aisle with boas and pythons on both sides and no exit in sight. My mom would have freaked!

This is the craziest lizard there. Jeremy wasn't so sure about him.

Ava near the fish and turtle pond.

This lizard's name was Conan. Rad. I had to take this picture for Eric.

Then it was parks galore. We went to three different locations. But Central Park in HB was the best (according to the five year old) since it was packed with tons of ducks, goose, dogs, horses and pigeons on the lake. These pictures remind me of Connecticut...trees, water, etc.

Of course we did lots of other fun things like coloring, playing catch, watching Spongebob and eating at all of the fine establishments like McDonald's, Burger King, Donut World and Roundtable Pizza. What more could a kid ask for?

Ava loved having Jeremy around although he wasn't too sure about her climbing all over him. She couldn't get enough of him. It was a fun two days and a quick glimpse into the two child household. It takes energy but it sure was a lot of fun too.

What do you think?

I saw this on a friend's blog and thought I would see what the results were for us. We hear something different everyday about which of us Ava looks like.

What do you think?

Of course, we always fall back on this answer...Ava looks like Ava. She is a good combo of both of us.

New Ride

Yesterday we got a new stroller for Ava. She is starting to outgrown her car seat/SnugRider combo. So step one was finding a new stroller then the new car seat. Anyone who knows me knows that this definitely required weeks of research. Not to mention it had to be the "right" price. After all was considered I decided to get the Peg Perego Aria OH. It had all of the features I wanted (minus the umbrella fold but it still is compact) in nice neutral colors. The biggest perk is that it's very lightweight, lighter than the Maclaren umbrella I originally wanted, weighing in at only 9 lbs. I won my auction at Ebay staying a few dollars below the maximum bid. So, we got a great stroller for a great price. How could I go wrong? We even went and picked it up in Paramount to forgo the shipping fee. And here it is:

Ava enjoyed sitting upright, having more moving freedom and facing outward to see the world. I actually found it to be a little sad not to have her little face staring up at me constantly.

We tried out the stroller last night at the Irvine Spectrum. We met Camille and Meredith at Chipotle for dinner and then onto the Fall Fashion Show and shopping. There were over 300 people at the show. It was quite entertaining and we even saw some contortionists.

Another Video

Ok, I know I post a lot but let me remind you that there are grandparents that live across the country. Also, I can't help that Ava is getting older and doing more "exciting" things.

With that said, here is another video of Ava crawling. She started in our bedroom and we called her into the family room. I love when she follows us or comes to us. I love to hear her little panting/growling/squealing coming down the hallway. She makes me smile.

She gets into everything and sometimes gets stuck and needs help.

Super fun night

Ava and Eric had a "super fun night" last night while I went to our friend Nicole's baby shower. While I was gone they played a few new games. Ava found playing catch hilarious and Eric captured it on film.

The First Blood

This morning Ava was playing happily in our bedroom while I was getting ready for the day and she found herself very entertained by the wall/floor heater. I figured no big deal but after a few minutes realized that it probably was really dirty so I went to check her hands when I noticed blood all over the heater. What?! I grabbed her hand and she had a little cut on her pointer finger. She didn't make a peep or even care to notice. I scooped her up to clean her up and put on a band-aid...the first blood shed. After I got the band-aid on all Ava wanted to do was suck on it. Nasty.

Nothing is safe anymore.

Now that Ava is off and exploring everything in the house. She is crawling, climbing, opening, pulling, etc. She needs a constant watchful eye.

Seal and Sand

We went back to the cove in Laguna Beach and this time I let Ava crawl in the sand. I don't know if that was a great idea but she loved it! As long as her pacifier was in she wasn't attempting to eat the sand.

Meredith buried Jeremy in the sand.

And a seal decided to come close to shore.

Lulu the bear

Ava has really grown to love her teddy bear that Michelle sent to her from Connecticut before she was even born. She gets so excited when she sees the bear and comes crawling right over. We named it Lulu, after Michelle, of course.

This video is of Ava giggling at Lulu playing peek-a-boo with her.

Birthday Fun

It was my birthday on Friday, August 10th. We had a really fun weekend celebrating. On Thursday evening Eric, Ava and I went to Claim Jumper at South Coast Plaza. Then Eric got me an ice cream cake and I gobbled up about a quarter of it that evening (I promise that it was smaller than it looks in this picture).

On Friday we met a bunch of family at The Spectrum Wahoo's for lunch and went shopping for a few hours. I got a couple fun birthday clothing items.

That evening we had a BBQ at the Gerdts house with all the fam. A big thanks to Gerrit for grilling (even though Eric and Cindy's burgers were bloody)!

Since the fun was, of course, going to continue on to Saturday we spent the night. On Saturday Eric helped fix the sprinklers (thanks for calling the faucet, Bryan) and went through old boxes of letters, pictures, magazines, Dr Pepper memorabilia, clothing, etc from pre-mission days and weeded out some old "treasures", some of the clothing even returned to their roots at Goodwill. Then in the afternoon we went to the pool and played. The kids went down for naps and the adults (minus the babysitter, Cindy - thanks!) headed out to the movies and saw Bourne Ultimatum. That evening we had dinner at Chipotle and enjoyed the nice evening by sitting outside.

Today, we met up with Justin, Kam, Gerrit and Chloe here in Huntington. We walked down the pier and had yummy burgers together. Chloe and Ava had a lot of fun playing together back at our house. I love that Ava is old enough to "play"! It's so cute. Here is a picture of them at the end of the evening.

The festivities continued onto the next weekend. On Sunday, August 19th, we had a family dinner and party for me, Brennan and Bill. Yummy BBQ ribs and funfetti cake again...how could we go wrong? Thanks to everyone for coming down and the fun gifts.

Stats are in...

For documenting purposes, here are Ava's 8 month stats from her doctor's appointment this morning.

Weight: 17 lbs 11 oz
Length: 28 1/2 inches

She is in the 50th percentile for weight and still topping the charts in the 90th percentile for height. She receive two vaccinations and of course cried when she was given the shot but a minute later Florence came back in and Ava was all smiles. I'm glad to know she doesn't hold grudges.

Dr Chang was pleased with all of her progress over the last two months, especially that she learned how to crawl. One thing the doctor was pretty surprised about was that she didn't have any teeth yet. Who knows!?

Her diet has changed considerably. She is going to eat real people food now, well sort of. Yogurt, cottage cheese, bread, Cherrios, eggs, etc even without teeth! She will start eating dinners now consisting of a meat, carbs and veggies...all in a little jar.

We are so happy that little Ava is a healthy baby!

New Favorite "Toy"

Ava's new favorite toy is soft, fuzzy, moves on its own, and makes noise.
Her new favorite "toy" = Spike's tail.
Uh oh.

And, how freaky are Spike's eyes from the flash?!
No worries though, Spike has proven to be really wonderful with kids.

Lazy Afternoon

I convinced Eric to take off yesterday afternoon and come to Laguna Beach with all of us. Camille introduced us to a great little spot on Monday and we were dying to go back, soon and often. The water was really beautiful and remarkably clear. It is such a pretty cove.

Hanging out at the beach for 4 hours may sound like a lazy afternoon but it really is work. Setting everything up and taking care of the little ones. Eric dug Ava a hole to play in. She kept trying to climb out but it was pretty secure besides her little hands reaching for the sand through every nook and cranny around the blanket. Holding her back gets to be an old game after a while.

Eric and I even had the chance to go out in the water together. Eric brought a boogie board and fins and swam over to the rocks to explore.

I suppose it was a little lazy. Both Ava and Eric dozed off in the sunshine after a hard hour or two of playing in the water, sand and eating lunch. They were total twins.

This particular afternoon the waves were much bigger than they were on Monday. Ava was in her hole, still sleeping, and the tide kept coming in. So Camille had an idea to build a protective wall and mote around Ava. So Camille, Jeremy, and I got to work building the sand wall. It did a great job for a while but eventually the big wave came. I snatched Ava just in time. The entire hole was filled with water and sand. Our chairs, towls, blankets, etc were soaked. The Millers and Karen are probably thankful they missed that wash out. Below is the before picture. Unfortunately there isn't an after picture since we were too busy cleaning up the mess.

8 months old

Today Ava turns 8 months old. Just yesterday I was driving to Laguna Beach and passed by Hoag Hospital on PCH and started to reminisce about Ava's birth day. I can't believe it was eight months ago. She is really turning into a toddler. Crawling, scooting, rolling, playing, trying to pull herself up, smiling, going in the ocean, swimming, eating sand, laughing, etc. I love her so much and can't imagine life without her.

Enjoy her photo shoot.
She actually has a runny nose today which is why
her mouth is hanging open in every picture.

On Thursday Ava has a doctor's appointment and I am excited to see how much she has grown in the past two months and also to find out what her new eating schedule will be and what new foods will be introduced. I will post the information and stats after the appointment.

Ava's Crawl

Here is a video finally capturing Ava's scooting crawl. Her favorite "toy" is a diaper. She loves to hear them crinkle which is why we chose it as her bait in this footage.

As she gets better (and more predictable) we'll post another short video. I love how her right foot kind of drags behind and how she thrusts herself forward.

She is now learning about maneuvering all over the apartment. I literally vacuum every morning to rid the carpet of any potential hazards. She needs whiskers so she stops banging her little head into furniture. She discovered the tile floor yesterday.

Watching Baby Einstein

I love to watch Ava watch her one and only Baby Einstein Video, First Signs. She is so into it. She watches it so closely and laughs with it too. I hope that she is learning some of the signs as well. I took these pictures of her while watching it last week. Eric laughs at her "sweatband" headband.

Big girl crib

Today we had to lower Ava's crib. We have found her sitting up in it after naps and in the morning. The next step is to pull herself up and we didn't want the step after that to be flipping out of the crib so we put it on the lowest setting. Now she seems to be a real toddler in her crib.
